Singapore Speeding Fines: What Changed for 2026-2027

Speeding penalties in Singapore were restructured from 1 January 2026, and the licence-suspension threshold tightens again from 2027 — what each band costs.

How Singapore prices a speeding notice

Driving above a speed limit is a traffic offence in Singapore, and the penalty is not a single figure — it rises in bands with how far the limit was exceeded. The Singapore Police Force's list of traffic offences separates exceeding the speed limit into bands by how far the limit was exceeded, and the demerit points rise with the band; the band for exceeding the limit by more than 40 and up to 50 km/hr is listed against prosecution in court rather than against a composition fine. That last point matters more than the arithmetic: past a certain margin the police list stops offering a sum to pay at all. An earlier version of this page said every listed band carried "its own demerit points and composition fine". Three of the four do; the fourth does not, and the verifier caught the difference.

Two things follow from that structure. A small margin and a large one are genuinely different offences on the schedule, not the same offence with a bigger number attached. And the demerit points move with the band, so the consequence for the licence scales alongside the consequence for the wallet.

The points that come with each band

The demerit points below are this site's signed rate payload, which tracks the Schedule to the Driver Improvement Points System Rules:

Margin over the limitDemerit points
Up to 20 km/h6
More than 20 and up to 30 km/h8
More than 30 and up to 40 km/h12

Heavy vehicles are not priced on the same scale as light vehicles: the Police list gives a separate composition-fine column for heavy vehicles at the same thresholds. This article does not reproduce those sums, because the fine columns in the published table do not survive extraction unambiguously and a wrong figure here would be worse than none.

This article also no longer states a commencement date for the current bands. An earlier version said the penalties took effect on 1 January 2026, sourced to a motoring news site whose article page now returns a navigation shell with no article text in it at all. Nothing on a reachable official page establishes that date, so it has been removed rather than repeated.

Demerit points stack, they do not substitute

Paying a composition fine settles the prosecution. It does not touch the points. Depending on the severity of the traffic offence, a licence holder may accumulate between 3 and 12 demerit points and be offered a composition fine, and if the traffic offence is more severe the licence holder may accumulate more than 12 demerit points and be prosecuted in court.

Where the points lead

Points are only worth tracking because of what they add up to. A non-probationary licence holder becomes liable for a first suspension of 12 weeks on accumulating 24 or more demerit points within 24 months, and that suspension is reduced to 4 weeks on successful completion of the DIPS Retraining Course. In this site's payload that threshold is 24 points within 24 months — the same rule.

A single speeding notice will not reach that on its own. Two or three inside the same two-year window, in the upper bands, can.

If you have been issued a speeding notice

  1. Read the margin recorded on the notice, not the speed alone — the margin is what decides the band, and the bands are where the whole difference lives.
  2. Check the demerit points separately from the fine. They are not alternatives to each other and paying does not remove them.
  3. If you are a new or probationary licence holder, treat any notice as more serious than the sum suggests: the probation threshold is far lower than the ordinary one.
  4. Check your accumulated points through the Police e-Services rather than estimating them from memory.
  5. If the recorded speed itself looks wrong, raise that before paying — paying is a settlement, not a placeholder.

What this article does not answer

It does not state the composition fine for any band, for light or heavy vehicles; it does not state a commencement date for the current bands; and it does not cover enhanced penalties in Silver Zones, School Zones or Friendly Streets, which an earlier version of this page asserted without a source that could be re-read. For any of those, the notice itself and the Traffic Police are the authorities, not this page.

Every figure is sourced to a named provision of a named instrument, with the citation beside it.
